Chapter 14
It was difficult to keep a straight face as the cloaked figuresâa mix of young and old, male and femaleâall turned, shock in their expressions, and looked my way. The potent scent of petrichor and vinegar had the cartilage in my nose stinging. Dark witches.
And standing slightly apart from the circle, wearing some amulet and holding what looked like a wooden staff with runes and symbols etched into the wood, was none other than my buddy Clive.
His lips were parted as though in the middle of an incantation, the expression of surprise and disbelief plastered all over his face. It had me all giddy inside.
I did not want to see Cliveâs junk. Too late. My eyes traveled down, and I couldnât help the laugh that bubbled out of me.
âNow that explains everything.â
Cliveâs face turned a few shades darker. âYou have no idea what youâve just done.â
âYouâve got me there, Clivy,â I mocked. âI mean, sheesh. This is just as awkward as watching a sex scene on TV with your parents. Weâve all been there.â
âYouâll pay for this.â
âFunny you should say that,â I told him. âWhat the hell is this? I thought witches gave the whole naked thing up a century ago. Unless⦠unless this is some creepy orgy? Clivy. You nasty, nasty witch.â
The male witchâs hateful gaze zeroed in on me. âYou are the vile one here. Not me.â
âI seriously doubt that, given your history. But seriously. What is this? Looks to me like youâre dabbling in magic you donât understand. And whatâs with the nakedness?â I laughed again. I couldnât help it.
âYou have no idea what real witchcraft is,â he said, his voice dripping with condescension. âYouâre not even a witch. Youâre nothing. Youâll never harness power like we can. Youâre just a human playing at being a witch.â
I shrugged. âNot like I havenât heard that before. Got something better?â
Valen looked at me. âAre we going to throw insults all night, or are we going to fight?â I could tell by the gleam in his eyes that the giant was anxious to pound Cliveâs head in. After all, he was responsible for shutting down Valenâs restaurant and offing Catelynâs family. Well, thatâs what I was going for. As such, he deserved a good olâ head pounding.
âIn a minute, honey,â I told him, my eyes back on Clive. âIâm enjoying seeing his naked ass squirm.â
âClive,â warned one of the females, the only one with dark skin. âWhat do you want us to do?â
I snorted. âYeah, Clivy. Please tell us.â I glanced around at the naked witches, all Dark witches by the intense scent of vinegar in the air that was making my eyes water. I wondered if any of them or if all of them were involved in the killing of Catelynâs family and those two dead witches in Valenâs restaurant.
âYour intrusion just made my job so much easier,â said Clive, that arrogant smile back on his face.
âMine too. You need to seriously rethink your wardrobe, though. You might catch a chill.
